As a parent of two kids and living in a house with a stairway we have been in daily need of a gate to keep our children away from the stair as well as the utility room. This left us with a desire to have a gate that would not take too much room, be easily maneuvered with one hand, and integrated in our house esthetics. The only product on the marked that fulfilled all three of those requirements was the KiddyGuard Avant from Lascal. We got one to start with and were happy with the unit that we got two more straight away (two for the stairs and one for the utility room).
We have been using it every day for the last years and the wear is not very bad. The only thing really to complain about it that the locking function is not straight up easy to understand for our guest and we end up instruction them with a standard talk before they are trusted to do the locking themselves. I explain it below.
I’ve read some reviews stating that the gate had opened even if the locking mechanism was hatched, I really don’t understand how that is possible if the gate is hooked onto the latch correctly. As a precaution I always pull the handle up and down to make sure that the gate is firmly engaged. So, in step 2 on how to close the gate it’s important to make sure that the gate is secured. See pictures below:
I have even made a help guide that I show my guests in case they don’t know how to operate the gate. Nothing fancy but it does the trick just fine.
Some pictures of the installation above our stairway. The top step is designed in such a way that it wouldn’t be possible to have the angled installation as we have below our stairway and I had to design the metal distance to make sure that there was no gap for the kids to fall into. I’m pretty happy with the result.
As seen in the pictures the design is very much integrated into our home and we believe that we will keep these up for the rest of our lives. The gates themselves is sturdy enough to be used to keep dogs away from rooms and even big dogs would stay behind it, at least if they were used to it since their puppy days (kind of the story about the baby elephant who got chained to an pole, the same elephant would not break free as an adult because it doesn’t even think it’s strong enough to move the pole).
The only thing that has happened over the years is the crease seen in the picture above. This is a result of NOT guiding the gate into the cassette.
